The Sorrell Foundation
Our two sample schools, Neale-Wade and Thomas Clarkson Community College have been working with The Sorrell Foundation to hear the thoughts and views of students.
Work has taken place in four stages:
1. Challenge - held in Somerset House, London. The objective of the day was for the pupil client team to identify the top 3 challenges that they would like their architect to solve in the design of their new school facilities.
2. Conversation - during this period students attended meetings, had brainstorms, went on inspirational visits to inform their brief, extended their research in the school and wider community, and kept their peers advised of developments through school displays, school newsletters and websites, and assemblies.

3. The Brief - The Sorrell Foundation ran a full day creative workshop at the Sorrell Foundation Young Design Centre in Somerset House, London. The workshop presented the opportunity to move ideas into reality and was essential in the development of the client team's brief.
The Sorrell Foundation used the draft briefs created by the pupils to produce individual publications for each school, plus an over-arching document containing all the briefs for the council. The publication content was based on everything that came out of the conversation and the creative development process.
4. The Celebration - 5th March 2008, March Town Hall - The Sorrell Foundation helped pupils rehearse the presentation of their pupil brief. Invited guests included Headteachers, lead teachers, governors, architects, local authority members and the other client teams. Pupils presented their pupil brief and received certificates of achievement from Lady Frances Sorrell.
Ultimately, students' views will provide valuable information, and will feed into the design and planning of schools. Pupil Briefs will be made available to potential bidders.
